![]() And he said to the man who made the recommendation, “If you make another recommendation of this sort, I will see to it that you lose your job.” And he and I corresponded for several years after that. And I was saved by Justice Levy of the children’s court in those days. Incidentally, they almost sent me away until I was 21 for that. I presented my dad the false one and I went in the room every night to do my homework and I read books, trashy books and I wrote letters saying I was ill and some teacher finally became concerned and came over to see us. It was the seven months of successful truancy, because I had two report cards, one real and one false. ![]() Well, we have one of the real pioneers of the battle against the public schools with us, Otto Scott, who still has, isn’t it true, Otto, the all time record truancy in New York City? they are precious enough, if they really love them, they are not going to subject them to those horrible risks. They realize that the risks are much too great. So the public school is a very dangerous place for a child and when I get through with my talk, generally the parents decide to remove their children from the public schools. Kids are coming to school with guns and knives and chains and children are being assaulted and robbed and even murdered. That certainly is not a very good atmosphere for a youngest to be brought up in.Īnd then, of course, there is also the physical danger, because public schools have become dangerous places. Men, born again Christianity, fundamentalists, the users of foul language. And one or two of the statements, at least, refer to the fact that in the 50s an aesthetic catholicism was made popular by Buckley and Kerr. Well, This noon I had a telephone call from John Lofton and he was telling me that we are being the subject of some verbal criticism in the media. But I believe that that is not all bad, because the home school movement and the Christian schools are going to have to collaborate and work together. Some of these children do come out of Christian schools also. So if that is a sign of the times, it is a very good sign that parents are finally doing what they have had to do all these years and that is remove their children from the public schools, from humanist education and they are deciding to educate their children at home. in southern California the California home school association had its convention and 15,000 people showed up. As a matter of fact, only a couple of weeks ago, I believe in. the home schooling movement has grown leaps and bounds. Well, you know, since I was last with you, it is about two years, a great deal has happened. What is happening on the home schooling front right now? As a matter of fact, I continually get letters from you saying that you have heard Sam Blumenfeld speak in your community and he was wonderful. I think he has covered more communities in the United States in recent years than almost any other man living. ![]() If he hasn’t been to your neighborhood, just wait. Home schooling and formal Christian schools. Sam Blumenfeld has been traveling back and forth across the United States speaking on Christian education. Some of the materials, due to the nature of the communicative settings associated with them, raise important theoretical questions about norms and expectations of (intercultural) communication and goals of language learning. The units use two types of authentic materials: natural conversations and entertainment media (TV and movies). We first describe the rationale for the expanded use of authentic language data in classroom instruction, and then we present four exploratory units to showcase some of the effective classroom teaching procedures that are useful to make learners aware of (and eventually use) important features of language interaction in Chinese. This journal issue contains a number of papers/teaching units that are dedicated to the review and analysis of some ways in which authentic language materials can be used for the teaching and learning of Mandarin Chinese from the beginning to advanced levels. (All relevant video clips used in this article can be found at this website: ) The study aims to explore some possibilities and methodologies of providing lower-level L2 learners an opportunity to know how a certain language structure is used in specific contexts in L1 discourse, and in so doing, teach learners how to make informed linguistic choices right from the beginning level. Drawing upon linguistic and applied linguistic findings, this study discusses five discourse-pragmatic functions of the double-nominative topic-comment construction and introduces a pedagogical design using authentic media materials like film clips and TV shows to teach elementary and intermediate level learners when and how to choose this topic-comment construction in specific contexts. Beginning and intermediate level learners tend to display a lack of use of it (Jin 1994 Cao et al. The seemingly optional use in discourse and rich discourse-pragmatic functions make the Mandarin topic-comment construction a challenging structure for L2 learners of Chinese.
